So, this is the number of people by age and previous occupation, on the live register in Ireland as of June 2013.
In the context of the reforms being rolled out, a Hartz-Ireland-lite, we gotta ask the question – are there really 80k Craft and Related posts unfilled? Do we think that in an economy which, on the domestic front, is flatlining, we have 60k unfilled posts for Plant and Machinery operators? And so on and so on.
By all means lets improve the communication of available posts, and by all means lets ensure that people find it sensible to take up posts offered. By all means lets celebrate export led jobs. But lets not fool ourselves that we will solve this problem from supply side initiatives alone (even counting emigration as a supply side initiative).
